Two Narrowly Escape Injury As Amtrak Train Hits Car In Hyde Park

HYDE PARK, N.Y. – Two people narrowly escaped injury Friday after they fled their car moments before it was hit by an Amtrak train in Hyde Park, local emergency officials said.

All that remains of a car hit by a train in Hyde Park Friday is a twisted heap of metal. Two people inside were able to escape safely before the train hit. Police are investigating the cause of the incident. No one one the train was hurt.

According to the Fairview Fire District, the collision occurred around 9:30 a.m. near the town’s River Point Road.

The car’s occupants had safely exited the vehicle before the train turned it into a twisted heap of metal, fire officials said.

None of the 178 passengers or four crew members aboard the train were injured, according to Fairview Chief Christopher Maeder.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

River Point Road crosses the railroad tracks just before the Hyde Park Marina.

Police and emergency crews responding to the scene included Fairview and Mobile Life Support Service, the state police, as well as the town’s and the MTA’s police.

According to multiple media reports, the train was traveling from Albany to Penn Station at the time of the accident.

The train suffered minimal damage and, after a 90-minute delay, continued on to New York City, media reports said.
