The unidentified pair were on a yacht north of the Tappan Zee Bridge when they dove into the choppy waters and quickly became overwhelmed by waves and the current, News 12 reported.

They were rescued by other passengers on the vessel, the News 12 story said.

A member of the Westchester County Police's Marine Unit was warning folks to be aware of the river's tricky currents and to exercise caution.

It's not unusual, the unit said on its website, for boaters to get into potentially deadly situations on the Hudson.

It pointed to the recent rescue of a Poughkeepsie couple who had to put out a distress call after their sailboat ran aground on a large rock off Scarborough.

The 28-foot vessel was taking on water and in danger of capsizing, the unit said.

The unit rescued Leathem Mehaffey, 61, and his wife Ann, 60. Neither were injured, the unit reported.

Also this month, a Bronx man and his son went into the water after their 15-foot sailboat capsized off Croton-on-Hudson. The unit rescued Michael Purcell, 41, and his 10-year-old son, righted the boat, and escorted them to shore.

In a third recent case, a worried Cortlandt mom called police to report that her 14-year-old daughter and a young friend were out sailing on the Hudson and had not come home at the expected time.

The unit searched for, and found, the teens, who were having a hard time getting back to shore because of the rough waters and brisk winds.

They were taken aboard the unit's boat and their sailboat was towed to the Viking Marina in Verplanck, police said.
