HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- What started last summer as a hobby for Hastings High School graduate Eric Gentile has grown into a full blown passion for rapping.
"Throughout my life I always kept writing for some reason," Gentile said of his lyrics.
Gentile, who went to Marist College for psychology, started out as a sound engineer and now interns at The Loft Recording Studios in Bronxville, where he said famous artists including Rihanna have recorded music. His first CD was just mastered and will be available on the rapper's several pages .
It wasn't always this smooth for Gentile though, who didn't take his music too seriously until recently.
"Senior year of college my dad got in this huge car accident in Cold Spring," he said. "It was a life-changing experience. He had like a three percent chance of living."
Since the accident, Gentile has started to take everything a little more seriously.
"I cared more about furthering myself as an artist after that," he said.
Gentile describes his music as catchy rap without being too bubbly. He said he is on his way to making a name for himself.
"Now I'm just going to start going to open mic nights and that's the last step of becoming "Airplane Erik" and the artist I want to be," he said.
With his music starting to take shape, Gentile said he wants to build up a following. However, he's not quite sure of what's next.
"I don't really know exactly where it's going to lead, which is kind of cool," he said. "I always was very structured, there's a very clear path to what was going on and it kind of limited from doing stuff that I wanted to do."
