The council, a nonprofit resource organization that works to ensure every child in Westchester has access to quality early care and education, will recognize the honorees at the annual Awards Breakfast at 8 a.m. Friday, June 6, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Tarrytown.

"Each year since 2003, the Child Care Council presents the Champions for Children Awards to individuals and organizations who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to bright futures for children by creating or funding life-changing programs and initiatives," representatives said. "At the same event, the Council presents Joey Awards to professional care providers and community leaders who make outstanding contributions to child care and quality of life for children and working parents."

Safian will be honored for his support of Phelps’child-care center, The Robin’s Nest, which provides services for hospital staff as well as working parents in the community, according to the release. A recent $1.4 million expansion allowed the center to offer nursery school and extended services for infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

“We are proud to have been the first workplace child care center in Westchester,” says Safian. “The expansion of Robin’s Nest this year is a testament to its outstanding reputation and the demand for the quality services it provides. We invested in this expansion to accommodate the additional child-care needs that Westchester’s economic growth will create.”

TD Bank will receive the designation for its support of a large number of nonprofits that improve the lives of children, youth and families throughout Westchester County.

"TD sponsored the Child Care Council’s work to improve the quality of science education in both afterschool programs and preschool classrooms, and was the first funding source for the Council’s early literacy project, inspiring multiple other(s)... to invest in the initiative, benefiting hundreds of children and families," representatives said.

“TD Bank is happy to support an initiative that helps promote quality early child care and educates young people on the importance of science,” said Ed Blaskey, market president of TD Bank. “The Child Care Council exemplifies an organization that cares about its community members and strives to make a difference in their lives and we are extremely proud to play a small part in its efforts.”

Spano will receive recognition for his work to raise expectations and outcomes for children in Yonkers through the Strive Cradle to Career Partnership.

“Our students are the next generation of leaders in our city,” said Spano. “Providing for a quality education system that offers every opportunity for our students to succeed is critical to supporting their future, and just as critical to supporting the future of Yonkers. Thanks to partners like the Child Care Council of Westchester and the Strive Cradle to Career Partnership, we are making great progress in achieving our goals.”
