TAVR is a life-saving procedure to replace a diseased aortic valve without open heart surgery. The team, consisting of cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional cardiologists, echo cardiologists, radiologists and cardiac anesthesiologists, performs the procedure in the state-of-the-art hybrid operating room.

“It has been a huge team effort,” said Dr. Martin Cohen, interventional cardiologist and director of outreach and research in cardiology. “We continue to be very pleased with the TAVR outcomes and the success of our program.”

“Our 100th case was special,” said Joanne Bennett, valve program coordinator. “The patient had two prior open heart surgeries and unfortunately her artificial tricuspid valve was failing. Performing open heart surgery a third time to replace her valve would have been extremely high risk. We placed an Edwards Sapien XT valve through her groin inside her failing tricuspid valve and the new valve worked instantaneously. She was able to go home in just a couple of days. This tricuspid valve-invalve replacement has only been done a handful of times in the United States, and we are very happy to be able to offer this option to our patients.”

“The entire team is tremendously proud of this milestone,” said Dr. Gilbert Tang, Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Director of Valve Disease Center at WMC. “We are thrilled to play a role in helping to improve the quality of life for many of our patients and their families. We look forward to offering this life-saving procedure to our greater community and region in the years to come.”
