With Schools Closed Hastings Youth Flock to Pool

With schools closed for the long weekend in Hastings-on-Hudson, it was time for some fun in the sun for the local kids.

The village pool, the Chemka Pool, was packed with kids of all ages as they enjoyed an extra day off from school. With summer right around the corner, this was one of the last days off before kids make the final push for the end of the school year.

With so many little ones in and around the pool, it's hard for parents alone to keep an eye on everyone. That's where local high school boys and girls come in, as they comprise the majority of the staff at Chemka Pool. Most are enjoying their day off in the sun, albeit at work, with the stress of making sure all the small fries are safe and having a good time.

Anthony Costantini is a senior at Hastings high school and has a laundry list of duties to help keep the pool functioning while on his day off from school.

"I man the front desk, I do registration for new members and then I swipe passes [and charge] guest fees," Costantini said. "That's about it."

While it's still early in terms of summer weather, Costantini said there are a lot of new members each year, including this season. Hastings residents got a taste of the pool on Saturday when it was free for everyone as the fee was waved for the day.

Andie D'Alessandro is another employee at the Chemka Pool who put in a few hours of work while on her day off from school. The sophomore at Hastings High School said the amount of people at the pool on Monday, despite the heat, was about average.

"It's usually this amount if not less on a normal day," D'Alessandro said.

That's a much more manageable number than last year and far from the approximately 700 people that crammed into Chemka last Memorial Day, according to employees.

With the pool now open for the summer, more information can be found on its hours and policies here.
