State police said the victim, 31-year-old Myrian M. Romero, of Union, was driving on the Palisades Parkway around 5:55 a.m. when her car veered off the road, crossed a grassy median and struck a tree.

Photos of the crash aftermath published by several local media outlets showed that the force of the crash had literally wrapped Romero’s Hyundai Elantra around the tree.

It took about 20 minutes for crews from the Hillcrest Fire Department to free Romero from the wreckage, police said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Rockland County medical examiner, state police said.

According to an earlier lohud.com article, Romero was apparently driving to work in Stony Point when the crash occurred. A construction helmet and other work gear, were found in the car, the lohud.com article said.

According to Romero’s Facebook page, she was an ironworker for Metallic Lathers and Reinforcing Ironworkers Local 46.

According to the lohud.com article, distracted driving has been ruled out and weather didn’t seem to be the cause of the crash.

The accident remains under investigation and state police at Haverstraw are asking anyone with information about it to call (845)- 364-0200.
