John E. Coffey, 94, Of Dobbs Ferry, Retired Chief Of Police

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - John E. "Jack" Coffey, a lifelong resident of Dobbs Ferry, died April 16. He was 94.

Coffey was born and raised in Dobbs Ferry, he was the son of Neville and Catherine Coffey. He graduated from Dobbs Ferry High School in 1938. He earned a degree in Criminal Justice from Westchester Community College. He served in the United States Navy as a medic from 1942 to 1945 stationed in the South Pacific. After returning from the service, he joined the Dobbs Ferry Police Department as a patrol officer. He became the chief of police in Dobbs Ferry in 1971. He retired from the force in 1981.

He was a 68-year member of the Dobbs Ferry Fire Department's Livingston Hose Company. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 1048 and the New York State Association of Police Chiefs. Jack was a parishioner of the Church of the Sacred Heart.

Coffey is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy"; children, John, Jr., Brian, Maureen Luckett, Colleen Weaver (Glen) and Patricia Giuliano (Joe); seven grandchildren; many nieces, nephews; and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents; and sisters, Dorothy Thoesen and Virginia Allison.

Calling hours are Monday, April 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, April 22 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 23 at the Church of the Sacred Heart.

Memorial contributions in Coffey's name may be made to the Church of the Sacred Heart in Dobbs Ferry.
