Joseph Gemma, 90, Lifelong Dobbs Ferry Resident

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Joseph A. Gemma, a lifelong Dobbs Ferry resident, died Friday, Oct. 19. He was 90.

A longtime member of the Dobbs Ferry Volunteer Fire Department Livingston Hose Company, Gemma helped spearhead a committee to build affordable housing for volunteer firefighters in the village.

Gemma was born in Dobbs Ferry to Angelo and Elizabeth Gemma. He served in the Army during World War II in the 81st Infantry Division, the "Wildcats." On June 22, 1947, he married Rose Tisi at Our Lady of Pompeii Church.

He was a founding and life member of the Embassy Club. He served on the board that was instrumental in turning the club over to the village for a senior center. Gemma was a member of America Legion Post 1048.

He graduated from Pace University and worked as an auditor for Blue Cross Blue Shield in New York. He was an avid fisherman, golfer and camper.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rose; two daughters, Christine (Keith Quinn) Gemma and Marilyn (David Lebedin) Gemma; a sister, Frances Gemma; a brother, Jimmy; two grandchildren and a great-grandson.

A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated Monday at Our Lady of Pompeii Church. Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to the Dobbs Ferry Volunteer Fire Department or American Legion Post 1048.
