Maria 'Mary' Farina, 91, Of Ardsley

ARDSLEY, N.Y. – Maria "Mary" Farina of Ardsley died Aug. 29. She was 91.

Farina was born Feb. 10, 1921, in New York City to Salvatore and Lucia Cuseo Fazzo. She graduated with honors from Evander Childs High School and worked for the Postal Telegraph in New York City in the early 1940s.

She was on duty the morning of the Pearl Harbor attack and got the first look at the incoming news on the ticker tape as she helped get it out to the rest of the country. She was a member of the Hope Club, started during World War II for monthly gatherings. Following the war, she became a homemaker.

At the age of 56, Farina started a second career as an empanelling clerk for the Westchester County Courts, where she remained for 15 years. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. A keen scrabble player, she was known to beat everyone, including her Ivy League graduate grandson, her family said.

Farina loved the shore, especially the Hamptons, as well as studying maps for road trips and admiring the stars in the nighttime sky.

Farina is survived by three children, John Farina, of Ardsley, Carol Ann (Kevin) Kealy, of Ardsley, and Jeff (Leslie) Farina, of Larchmont; a sister, Dorothy Nugent; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Salvatore Farina; two brothers, Angelo and Scott, and a sister, Sadie.

A Mass of the resurrection was celebrated Tuesday at Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Dobbs Ferry. Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry handled arrangements.
