New York Giants Legend, Sportscaster Frank Gifford Dies At 84

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Frank Gifford, a star running back and receiver for the New York Giants who went on to become a nationally renowned sportscaster, died Sunday of natural causes at his home in Greenwich. He was 84.

Gifford's death was confirmed in a statement released by NBC News. Gifford was the husband of NBC "Today" anchor Kathie Lee Gifford.

"It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and friend, Frank Gifford," the statement read. "Frank died suddenly this beautiful Sunday morning of natural causes at his Connecticut home.

"We rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live, and we feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being. We ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time and we thank you for your prayers."

A football Hall-of-Famer, Gifford was NFL MVP in 1956, leading the Giants to the league championship. 

He then enjoyed an enormously successful career as a sportscaster, most notably on ABC's "Monday Night Football" from 1971 to 1985.
