DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. Steve Paul, the former owner of the Scene, a New York City nightclub that saw the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Liza Minelli and Richard Pryor, died Oct. 21 at the age of 71. A graduate of Dobbs Ferry High School, he died in a Queens hospital of an unknown cause, according to The New York Times.
Stephen Neal Paul was born April 28, 1941, in the Bronx. The son of a high school principal, he graduated from Dobbs Ferry High School at the age of 16. He started working in public relations for New York restaurants before opening the Scene in 1964 at age 23.
Poets, musicians and comedians all flocked to the Midtown nightclub, modeled after Parisian discos. Paul went on to manage musicians and start a record label, Blue Sky Records, and host a nationally syndicated television show called "Steve Paul's The Scene." The Scene closed in 1970.
Paul's longtime partner, Robert Kitchen, died more than three years ago. No immediate family members survive.
