IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Westchester County Police Marine Unit rescued two men from the Hudson River on Wednesday after their sailboat capsized near Irvington.

The incident began at 4:22 p.m. when the two men who are about 30 years old transmitted a distress call over a U.S. Coast Guard marine radio channel. They reported that their sailboat had capsized and they were in the water.

The county police Marine Unit crew aboard the Marine 3 patrol boat heard the distress call and proceeded south on the Hudson from their position near the Tappan Zee Bridge. When the Marine Unit arrived minutes later, officers observed the two men clinging to the side of the capsized vessel. The location was opposite the Ardsley-on-Hudson railroad station.

Both men, one from Dobbs Ferry and the other from New Jersey, were wearing life vests.

Officers pulled the two men from the river and were able to keep their 16-foot Hobie Cat sailboat from sinking. They transported the two men back to Dobbs Ferry and also towed the vessel back at that time.

The men were not injured and declined medical attention, according to the county police.

“The safety precautions these two men took before setting sail, including having a working marine radio and wearing life vests, played a significant role their rescue,” said Kieran O’Leary, public information officer for the Westchester County Police. “This successful outcome is a good reminder to all boaters to carry proper safety equipment and always wear life vests when out on the water.”

The Irvington Fire Department assisted the county police marine unit during Wednesday's rescue. They were responding to a report of two people stranded in a boat in the Hudson near Irvington.
