A family dog had to be quarantined for several days after attacking a mailman and biting his leg in Westchester, resulting in the postal worker being treated at Nyack Hospital.

A U.S. Postal Service supervisor reported to police in Scarsdale that a dog on Heathcote Road bit a mail carrier on Aug. 29 on the left leg, leaving him injured.

The supervisor told responding officers that the victim had driven himself to Nyack Hospital for evaluation and treatment immediately after the incident, which made it impossible to interview him or observe the injury, according to police.

Police said that the dog owner proceeded to provide officers with up-to-date vaccination paperwork, though he was advised to keep the dog quarantined for 10 days, which is mandated by Agriculture and Markets Law.

Officers later located the victim, who was advised that in the future, he should remain on scene so that the bite can be viewed by police and documented. A Westchester County Bite and Scratch form was completed and mailed to authorities. Police said that they would be in contact with the victim and dog’s owner following the mandatory quarantine.
