GREENBURGH, N.Y. - Irvington police are warning local businesses of a phone scam involving a faux Con Edison employee calling about a lack of payment.

According to police, local businesses have recently received a call from someone falsely stating they are from the Con Edison billing department, and the owner’s electricity has been scheduled to be turned off due to a lack of payment.

Police said that the caller then instructs the business owner to go to a local Rite Aid to buy enough “Green Dot Money Paks” to cover the amount owed and call back with the serial numbers for the cards, although Con Edison does not accept payment from such cards.

"Please be aware of the following phone scam that local businesses have been receiving. A call is received from someone stating they are from Con Edison's billing department and the business electricity is scheduled to be turned off, due to lack of payment," the department warned in a statement. "The caller then instructs the business owner go to a local Rite Aid to buy enough "Green Dot Money Paks" to cover the amount owed and call back with the serial numbers from those cards. Con Edison does not accept payment from such cards. Please do not fall victim to this scam."
