WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- New York State Police are investigation the cause of a double fatal collision Friday along the New York State Thruway in Rockland County, a crash that caused traffic delays into Westchester County.

The collision involved one tractor-trailer, two box trucks and another vehicle on Interstate 87 at Exit 14B (Airmont Road), state police said. Both the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit and Collision Reconstruction Unit took part in the investigation.

The accident happened about 9:45 a.m. Friday, state police said. All southbound traffic was diverted at Exit 15 to Route 17 south.  Police said a mattress box truck traveling north in the right lane, cut across two lanes of travel, struck a box truck and passenger vehicle then hit a guardrail and crossed into southbound traffic, where it was struck by a tractor-trailer, according to police.

The driver of the mattress box truck, Rambaran Hemankumar, 33 of Jamaica, Queens, and his passenger, Juan Soto, 20 of Woodhaven, N.Y., died from their injuries, police said.

The driver of the second box truck, Peter Lebron, 24 of Newburgh was uninjured, police said.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, a Dodge Ram, Louis Riconda, 51 of Corona, Queens, was uninjured. He was traveling with three passengers, one of whom sustained a minor injury, police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Tyrone Poole, 43 of New Haven, Conn., sustained serious injuries and was in stable condition, police said.

The accident remains under investigation.
