The Westchester Board of Legislators voted to approve five inter-municipal agreements to provide various services for seniors funded through grants, according to a press release. The IMAs were vetted through the Budget & Appropriations Committee and the Seniors & Constituencies Committee. The grants were made available through the New York State Office for the Aging.
"The programs that the grants will support provide a variety of services to elderly residents from nutrition and wellness programs to transportation assistance," representatives said in the release.
"I am very excited to approve these IMAs to support a very important resource in our communities, our senior residents," said Legislator Bernice Spreckman ( R-Yonkers, Mount Vernon), Chair of the Seniors & Constituencies Committee. "Working with our municipal partners, these funds will go toward programs that contribute to our senior’s physical well-being and emotional well being."
Spreckman has been a "tireless advocate for Westchester County seniors throughout her career in public service," according to the release.
"The Expanded In-home Services for the Elderly Program provides services that allow seniors to stay in their homes and is in fact less expensive than the costs of moving seniors into an assisted care facility," Spreckman said. "These programs are geared toward reaching those who most need our support these programs will put particular emphasis on individuals who are at high risk like low-income, minority and isolated elderly."
The Community Services for the Elderly Program funds will be used to provide case management, information, assistance and other services to help seniors stay in their homes and communities, according to the release.
"I am very pleased for the Budget & Appropriations Committee to approve these important IMAs to provide critical support services for Westchester Seniors," said Legislator Sheila Marcotte ( R-Eastchester, New Rochelle, Tuckahoe). "It is so important that we remain attuned to the needs of our seniors, a group who too frequently don't have the ability or opportunity to speak up for themselves. These IMAs will fund programs that provide home visits, nutritional and wellness counseling, transportation to events and programs at our community senior centers. Community interaction with seniors translates to advocacy to help seniors stay in their homes and learn about other public services that are available to them."
