Earthquake Felt By Some In Ossining, Briarcliff

OSSINING, N.Y. – While many people in Ossining did not feel the 5.9-magnitude earthquake that originated near Mineral, Va. on Tuesday afternoon, some in Ossining and Briarcliff did report that they felt some shaking from the temblor.

"My lamps were shaking, magazines fell off the shelf in Briarcliff," said Melissa Reiner on The Daily Ossining’s Facebook.

Michelle Friedel reported she also felt shaking. "I was at the McDonald's drive thru in Arcadian (shopping center) and was wondering why my car was shaking back and forth so much!" she posted on Facebook.

Ossining police sent out a text through the Nixle emergency alert system that said, "The Ossining Police received reports of shaking, but no damage or injuries connected to the earthquake in Virginia."

Many, like Cynthia Granda, of Putnam Valley, did not feel anything themselves, but heard about effects of the earthquake from others.

"My boyfriend texted me that he was working in construction cutting a rock. He felt the shaking and it broke the rock. That's how I found out about the earthquake," said Granda, who was driving to a doctor's appointment in Ossining when aftershocks struck parts of New York.

Sitting on the steps of the Family Medicine of Westchester clinic on South Highland Avenue, Granda and her sister, Sasha Granda, said they did not feel any shaking as did the boyfriend in Peekskill. They did, however, notice that their cell phone texting service was slow, probably due to earthquake-related calls and texts flooding cellular systems.

Next door at Universo Mexicano restaurant, Gloria Soriano, the owner of the restaurant, echoed Granda's comments.

"I didn't feel anything, but when I was trying to get to my voicemail because I had two messages I couldn't get through," Soriano said.

Linda Foglia, a spokeswoman for the state department of corrections that oversees Sing Sing prison, said Sing Sing officers reported not feeling any effects of the earthquake.

"We don't comment on any kind of evacuation plans, but the facility didn't even feel the earthquake," she said.

The New York Times reported that people in Mineral, Va., a town of 500 located about four miles from the quake's center, reported extensive damage to items inside their homes, and some cracks in their walls, but no loss of electricity after the quake hit shortly before 2 p.m.

Anthony Robinson, of Yonkers, was watching the news at Lucy's pizzeria on the corner of Church Street and South Highland Avenue about forty five minutes after the earthquake.

"It's just surprising,” he said. “I wouldn't have expected to hear something like that about an earthquake in New York. It's very unusual.”
