Sex Offender in Putnam Failed To Report Move For Second Time, Police Say

SOUTHEAST, N.Y. – A registered sex offender is facing more time behind bars for failing to report -- again -- that he had moved to a new address, as required by law, according to Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith.

William M. Deitz, a "level 3" registered sex offender, is facing jail time and fines for allegedly failing to report an address change. It's the second time, authorities say, he has done so in a year.

According to police, William M. Deitz, 68, moved out of the Budget Motor Inn on Route 6 in Mahopac in March and into an apartment in Southeast without notifying authorities.

Deitz, a “level 3,” or high-risk, offender had been convicted in 1983 of having sex with four girls in New Jersey who ranged in age from 11 to 13.

He received a sentence of up to 15 years of prison in the New Jersey case.

Smith said that Deitz had been convicted to failing to report a change of address in 2015. He served about eight months and was released from prison last December.

If convicted of the current charge, Deitz could get up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine, police said.

Under the state’s “Meghan’s Law,” sex offenders have to report address changes with 10 days of moving. Failure to do so is a felony, police said.

Deitz was discovered living with a female acquaintance when Sheriff’s Investigator Jeffrey Devolve made a random status check on Deitz at the Mahopac motel and found he had moved out.

Deitz was arraigned in Town of Carmel Justice Court and sent to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bail bond.

He is scheduled to return to the court on Tuesday, May 17.
