ARDSLEY, N.Y. Any woman whos ever attended a wedding reception or prom, is likely to have a formal dress or two collecting dust in the closet. Operation Prom takes those old dresses and puts them to good use.
Its just nice to give back, said Ardsley Youth Advocate Allison Mastrogiacomo. I have some dresses in my closet that Im not going to wear again so its always nice to give to people that might need something.
Operation Prom takes dresses donated by local residents in the community and gives them to less fortunate girls across Westchester just in time for prom season. The initiative is being run by the Ardsley High School key club and its advisor Maryanne Tina.
We here in Ardsley thought were a perfect school to get this going, said Tina, who is also a teaching assistant at Ardsley High School. We have lots of kids that attend lots of functions. We have a lot of people who have these lovely dresses and dont know what to do with them now that theyve served their purpose.
Tina said the club has run the initiative in the past, but it was the students who wanted to make sure Operation Prom was this years donation effort.
The kids here have a big heart and if they have things they love, like beautiful dresses and evening wear, whatever, theres a great wish to share, she said. So they want to see somebody else enjoy what they once enjoyed.
The donation effort runs until March 7 and prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, other formal dresses and overnight bags can be dropped off in the Ardsley High School lobby.
Everybodys going through their closets here in Ardsley and coming up with some very wonderful things that will make someone very happy and feel good about themselves as well, Tina said.
