DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Dobbs Ferry schools will see a major modernization of its facilities in 2016-17 thanks to local voters.

"We are really pleased with the overwhelming support of our community who understood that all of the improvements will impact the educational experiences of Dobbs Ferry students in important ways,” said Dobbs Ferry Superintendent of Schools Lisa Brady.

The district's $16 million capital projects proposal was approved by voters on Tuesday, Oct. 21 with 510 voting yes and 270 no .

Voters approved a $14.2 million bond to be paid over the next 15 years. The remainder of the $16 million cost is being funded through the district’s reserve for capital projects.

“The District is simultaneously retiring debt, taking advantage of low interest rates and bundling infrastructure and athletic projects to maximize State Aid, resulting in little or no tax increase for Dobbs Ferry taxpayers,” the bond’s fact sheet reads.

About 67 percent of the work to be done under the bond are facility upgrades that help keep the district up to code and in safe conditions for students.

Some of these items include the following:

  • Replacing roofs, windows and floors
  • Abating ceilings
  • Installing air conditioning
  • Electrical upgrades
  • Energy efficient measures
  • Asbestos abatement

The remaining 26 is for athletic facilities projects and 7 percent is work to done on the arts and technology facilities. This includes four new tennis courts that are also open to the community, a new synthetic turf and multipurpose field complete with new bleachers at Springhurst Elementary School; replacement of existing turf at Dobbs Ferry High School; balcony seating in the auditorium; and a renovated high school/middle school library.

“It is clear that folks understood the financial benefits of undertaking this work at this particular point in time,” Brady told Daily Voice. “It is exciting to be able to move ahead with the design phase of the projects."
