The Irvington PTSA is selling bricks to raise money for beautification projects at the school district buildings, and there’s still time to get involved.
PTSA members are asking the public to help reach their goal of selling 100 bricks by March 1. The purchased engraved bricks will become part of a new patio with a cobblestone border on the middle school and high school campus quad that will be installed in April.
“This brick drive is very much aligned with Irvington and the incredible sense of community we have here,” said Irvington PTSA Co-President Allison Waguespack, who is leading the fundraising efforts. “It will not only have long-lasting effects both in the permanent nature of the inscribed bricks and the patio that will be built for the students, but also because the money we hope to raise will be used to fund environmental improvements to the schools.”
Waguespack said other projects include creating a teaching garden at Main Street School and a new outdoor play space at Dows Lane Elementary School. “As humans, we are all affected by our environment,” she said. “By creating improvements in the outdoor spaces, we believe it will create improvements in student and faculty attitudes, which can lead to greater achievement for both.”
Bricks are available for purchase in two sizes: 4 inches by 8 inches or 9 inches by 8 inches, and a logo can be added. Individuals can be recognized by their sports or academic achievements or teacher retirements. Individuals can buy a brick for themselves, their current student, their graduate, their favorite staff member or as a dedication.
“For my children, who are in second and sixth grade, I know it will be special for them to see their brick as they move through their schooling and know that it contributed to something bigger than just a patio,” Waguespack said.
