DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. Dobbs Ferry superintendent Lisa Brady told the school board this week that the district's new Annual Professional Performance Review plan was very ambitious and would require evaluators to be trained.
Brady said the district would contract with the Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES to train the evaluators.
"They seem to have a very strong handle on what needs to be done in terms of training," Brady said of the BOCES.
State law requires school districts statewide to come up with a new plan to evaluate the effectiveness of teachers and principals.
The plan document was approved by the board of education Thursday night, which was also the deadline set by law that a plan needed to be approved.
"If teachers are on board with it great, if not it doesn't matter," Brady said. "A decision had to be made."
Another idea discussed at the board meeting was the possible implementation of the Danielson teacher evaluation rubric. Brady said her goal for the rubric, which she has worked with for the past 10 years, is to get other local districts to use it as well.
"When you have multiple districts using the same rubric we can get together and share the professional development, have conversations with administrators from other districts," she said. "We're small, so we can talk to ourselves a lot, but I think part of the better conversation is talking with other administrators and other people in other districts. If we're all using different things those conversations can be not as productive."
Also discussed was the status of the new security aide position at the Dobbs Ferry High School complex, which the board said would most likely be filled before the end of September.
The board also approved the change of the cut-off date for incoming kindergarten students in Dobbs Ferry. The cut-off date was changed from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31 and will be implemented for this school year.
