Kateku, a former student of middle school language arts teacher Rachel Lief who is coordinating the event, has won numerous national poetry slam contests.
The seventh graders will host the event and dress as waiters, servers, greeters and “bartenders” and read their original works in front of an audience of family and friends. The event includes music, step, singing, spoken word poetry, group pieces and rap, written by students. Guests can enjoy an evening of lattes, finger foods and great prose.
