The drills would help make the district's emergency management plan, which includes local emergency responders, more effective for the Dobbs Ferry Middle and High School and Springhurst Elementary School..
"Having an emergency management plan in place is vital to the safety of our entire school community, but walking through and rehearsing that plan is equally important," District Superintendent Lisa Brady said in a letter to the community. "These drills will not be on the same days due to the coordination necessary with local emergency responders."
The school district's Lock-Down procedure is used if there is an immediate and imminent threat to the school building population. Students and staff are secured in the rooms they are currently occupying. All doors remain locked and no one will be permitted to enter or exit the buildings until further notice from the Principal. This procedure is designed to ensure that students and staff are in the safest possible locations. The drills will last approximately 15-20 minutes.
The day and time of all practice drills, including fire drills and emergency evacuation procedures, will not be announced ahead of time. After each drill, faculty members will speak with students to emphasize the importance of safety procedures and to answer any questions, while administrators will meet with police and fire department personnel to debrief.
"We firmly believe that these practice drills are an essential part of the District’s overall emergency preparedness," Brady said. "It is our hope that we will never have to implement any of these plans, but in the event of an unexpected threat, the District will respond with all of its resources to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.
