Hudson River Community Education (HRCE) will offer a wide variety of class offerings, some of which include art, exercise, computers, social media, languages and college prep, to adults and teens in Westchester.
Sylvia Fassler-Wallach, HRCE’s program coordinator and the school district’s assistant superintendent of finance, facilities and operations, said the district began putting the program together over the summer.
“Several years ago the Inter-Village program, previously managed by the Ardsley School District, was turned over to Westchester Community College,” said Fassler-Wallach. “The general feeling was that people were interested in more course offerings than are currently available.”
Fassler-Wallach told Daily Voice that the desire for additional Rivertowns-based continuing education also coincided with the district’s efforts make its facilities available to the public.
“The majority of the district's residents do not currently have school-age children,” said Fassler-Wallach. “We are working to expand our reach to all of our constituents and become a valuable resource in adult education."
Dobbs Ferry Schools will launch the program in early February. The district isn’t sure if the program will bring in revenue, but it is expected to at least break even.
“Our prices will be calculated based on our costs,” Fassler-Wallach explained. “In accordance with (New York State) law, the program must be self-sustaining.”
Classes will be held on afternoons, evenings and on Saturdays. Some classes may meet only once, with others that could last six to eight weeks.
“We hope it becomes a valuable resource for the entire community,” said Fassler-Wallach.
The HRCE is currently looking for knowledge and passionate instructors for its opening winter session who will independently contract with the school district at $50 per hour.
