Dobbs Ferry Students Join National Junior Honor Society

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Twenty Dobbs Ferry Middle School students were inducted into the Dobbs Ferry Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society at a special induction ceremony held at the school on June 6.

The newest members will be entering eighth grade in the fall and were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement during the past school year, the school district reported.

The inductees are: Raquel Addona, Rebecca Baron, Abigail Bayer-Mertens Human, Allison Burtt, Nicolas (Nico) Capetanos, Ethan Ferland, Cole Ginghina, Jamie Kramer, Isabel Long, Camryn McCarthy, Jolie McDonnell, Veronika Mocarska, Erin Molz, James Monahan, Aaron Paul Doss, Mijyo Sasaki, Aidan Sheridan, Patrick Straub, Elizabeth Werthman and Kyler Wurf.

According to chapter advisers Annette Gonzalez and Rose Graeff, the requirements for admission to the National Junior Honor Society are stringent so that it is a meaningful accomplishment for students. To be eligible for membership, seventh-grade students must achieve a 4.0 grade-point average in each of the three quarters in all of their subject areas. However, scholarship is only one element of consideration.

Character is another key qualification, and membership is also based on leadership, citizenship and community/school service. The new inductees will be monitored throughout the coming year to make sure that they maintain high academic standards. The NJHS members are involved on a regular basis with peer tutoring, community service projects, and they hold a number of fundraisers throughout the school year for various charities that are selected by the students themselves.

“This group brings a wide variety of talent and interests along with their many academic accomplishments and they should all be commended,” said Gonzalez and Graeff. “The students worked to maintain their scholastic achievement while pursuing many different extracurricular activities.”
