DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. ? Students at Dobbs Ferry's Springhurst School spent Valentine's Day reading to help less fortunate students around the world.

The more than 700 elementary school children took part in a “Have a Heart Read-A-Thon” that raised more than $2,700 for the Pencils of Promise Charity.

Anne Quick, a librarian at the Dobbs Ferry Public Library, brought her greyhound Too Tall, a certified therapy dog and Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.).

“The mission of 'Pencils of Promise' is to build schools and increase educational opportunities in less fortunate communities around the world,” said Principal Julia Drake. "Springhurst students are learning that many children do not get the opportunity to go to school and receive an education, something many of us take for granted.”

The Springhurst effort follows a fundraiser last year that brought in $2,000, enough to help educate 75 students for a year.

“This activity could not have been possible without the efforts of fourth-grade teacher Janet Foresti and Springhurst Librarian Sue Frey," Drake said. "I really appreciate their help in organizing the Read-a-Thon.”
