Dobbs Ferry Teacher Goes To School In Japan

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Josh Rosen works as a math specialist at Dobbs Ferry's Springhurst Elementary School and he will soon be heading overseas to help sharpen his craft even further.

“I’m going for about two weeks to visit Japanese schools to learn about their math instruction,” Rosen said.  “So I’m going to observe their lessons and participate in discussions about their lessons there.”

Rosen will be heading to Japan for an immersion program with other teachers from around the world from June 24 to July 5.  Rosen was awarded a grant that allowed him to attend the 12 day program.

“It’s exciting because it’s an opportunity to see another kind of teaching and also to make a connection with teachers from another culture,” he said.  “I think for me I’m excited about participating in math instruction in a very, very high level.”

Rosen said the program is about more than just what is taught in the classroom, it is about how it is taught.

“The way they design lessons, not just the content they want to teach, but also what behaviors they want the kids to have as learners,” he said.  “They want to get kids excited about math.  They want to get kids talking to each other about math.  It’s not just learning about adding fractions.”

A press release from the school district said Rosen will also be blogging about his experiences throughout his trip to Japan.

“It’s about trying to step out of where you are and see how teaching happens in other places and see what ideas you can bring back,” he said.
