As a result, $10,000 was raised for St. Christopher’s to support development director and Ossining resident Kurt Kannemeyer as he prepares to climb the 19,500-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania Wednesday, April 1, to raise awareness and money for an Independent Living Services Center for St. Christopher’s developmentally-disabled children at their Valhalla Campus.

“I am pleased that the community continues to come together to support this initiative,” said Kannemeyer. “It is their inspiration that will help me reach my goal when I take the seven-day climb to the summit of the highest mountain in Africa.”

In an environment where children are faced with their own “mountains” on a daily basis, Kannemeyer, an Ossining resident, has become a role model. In addition to raising awareness for at-risk, special-needs children, he will be climbing in honor of his mother, Gladys, who passed away last July after a long battle with breast cancer.

Since the fall, St. Christopher has been able to raise $20,000. With $10,000 more, St. Christopher’s will be able to reach its goal.

“I thought it was amazing to see different groups of people come together and raise money for St. Christopher’s,” said John Leone, owner of Beechmont Tavern. “Kurt has been a driving force, spreading St. Christopher’s mission throughout the community.”
