DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Dobbs Ferry High School senior Rebecca Wiersma has been named a finalist in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program, the school announced Monday.

Wiersma, who is member of the National Honor Society and French Honor Society, is among 15,000 finalists chosen from 1.5 million students entered in the program. Winners will be selected from the finalist group and receive scholarship offers, which will be announced beginning in April.

An outstanding student, athlete and musician, Wiersma also is co-editor of the school newspaper, the Eagle Echo, and a writer for Orpheus, the school's literary magazine. She has been the president of the Sign Language Club since ninth grade.

Wiersma is the captain of the Eagles varsity cross country team and runs both indoor and outdoor track. Her specialty is the 2-mile race. She has been studying the piano since she was 5.

Wiersma has been involved in Dobbs Ferry High School’s Science Research Program the last three years and is very interested in the field of genetics. Her research project is focused on finding a treatment or cure for Noonan syndrome, a genetic disorder that can lead to heart disease and increased risk of developing Leukemia. She hopes to possibly major in biology in college, while continuing to pursue her French studies.
