WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Last week's one-two punch of winter weather erased the last snow days for many area schools districts.

At least a half dozen school districts in Putnam and Westchester counties have had to give up professional development days or parts of spring break to make up lost instructional time.

Lakeland Central School District used all of its six snow days earlier this winter -- plus a seventh day for inclement weather on Thursday -- so it will give up a Superintendent's Conference Day on March 20 to maintain the state minimum of 180 instructional days for the 2014-15 school year.

If another day is needed, Lakeland's calendar designates Monday April 6 -- the day after Easter --for a makeup day.

Chappaqua Central School DIstrict also lost recess time off on April 6, Mach 30 and March 31 to make up for snow days. And March 27 is now a full day of school in Chappaqua, previously planned for a half-day.

Yorktown Central School District had to steal three days from its spring breaks to make up for snow days. Yorktown used five allotted snow days, plus three more days. So Yorktown schools will be in session Monday March 30, Tuesday March 31 and Monday April 6. If more days are need in Yorktown, they will be taken in the following order from spring recess: Wednesday April 1, Thursday April 2 and Friday April 3.

Mamaroneck Union Free School District and Rye City schools will now be in session on Monday April 6, a snow makeup day, after using up their last snow day on Thursday.

"Mother Nature has not been kind to us this year,'' Rye Schools Superintendent Frank Alvarez wrote parents on Friday. "I regret any inconvenience this may cause, but our schools must fulfill the 180-day State requirement. Here's hoping spring is around the corner!"

Elmsford Union Free School District also has begun taking away spring time off to make up for snow days.

April 10 is now a regular school day in Elmsford because of last week's snowstorm.

"I am hopeful this is winter's last blast!" Elmsford Superintendent Joseph L. Ricca said on Thursday.

Hendrick Hudson Schools maxed out on four snow days, and subbed one professional development day, but has not had to dip into other time off. Like many other districts, Hendrick Hudson students would lose Monday April 6 if any more time has to be taken for foul weather.

Peekskill City School District also used all of its snow days, and would be in session on March 30 in the event of another lost day.

Tuckahoe Union Free School District is making up a day on March 30, and Eastchester schools plan to make up a an extra snow day on May 21.

Bedford Central School District had to give up Monday March 30 to make up for its last snow day.

Tarrytown Union Free School District used up four snow days, but is another district lucky enough to have not dipped into planned spring breaks to make up days -- at least not yet.

In New Rochelle, Columbus Elementary and the high school will be open on Monday April 6, following boiler and gas line problems that forced school closures, and all schools will hold class on Monday, April 27, which was a previously scheduled Superintendent's Conference Day. Schools will remain closed on Friday May 22, but open on Tuesday May 26 -- assuming no more snow days, of course.
