Arts in modern culture students have been studying hip-hop culture, the graffiti movement, and the phenomenal growth of street art both here and internationally, a movement that makes art in public spaces, which often comments on societal and political issues.
During the tour, students met and observed two prominent Dutch artists who were in the country for two weeks, putting up work for the Bushwick Collective by invitation.
Bushwick Brooklyn is an area where light industry does business next to a gentrifying neighborhood. A local property/business owner has recognized the street artists needs for a canvas – especially since the demise of 5 Pointz, the “graffiti capital of the world” in Long Island City, Queens – visited last year by the same classes. He and several local proprietors have sanctioned a curated collection of street art that reflects the broad interests and agendas of artists from all over the world. More than graffiti, street art’s older brother, this type of outdoor artwork, two to four stories high, across seemingly inaccessible upper reaches of buildings and lining the street, portrays a multitude of motifs and motives.
