HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Clay Tercek, a baritone saxophonist and Hastings High School junior, was chosen to be part of the Westchester All-County Jazz Ensemble.
His audition consisted of one prepared piece, an improvisation and a sight read piece.
Tercek began playing the saxophone in the fourth-grade and switched to the baritone saxophone in eighth-grade.
“I like the warm, rich voice that it possesses,” he says.
Gerry Mulligan is his stylistic model, and the piece he selected for his audition was by Charlie Parker.
Tercek is the baritone saxophonist in the Hastings Band and Jazz Ensemble. When he is not playing an instrument, he is head sound technician for all the theater productions in the high school.
Although he excels as a musician, he currently is planning to pursue a computer science education after he graduates.
He is taught by Hastings High School instrumental music teacher Ken Jernigan and studies privately with Barbara Cifelli in Hastings.
Jernigan said Tercek is “one fine young man.”
