Hastings Environmental Club Heads to State Finals

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – After beat out 10 other Westchester high school teams in the regional competition last month, the Hastings High School environmental club will be heading to the Envirothon state finals.

“We really didn’t [expect to win]. I think we were all surprised,” said teacher Melissa Shandroff, who teaches AP environmental science and leads the club. “Not because we didn’t think we could do it, but it was our first year heading over there in a number of years. And we just wanted to see what it was all about and make a good showing.”

The Hastings team will represent Westchester County at the state finals May 23 and 24 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva. Berenice Tompkins, Lydia Lichtiger, Veronica Erdman, Clara Weinstein and Ariadne Bozigos make up the Hastings squad.

The regional competition included questions on everything from aquatics to soil, and forestry to wildlife. Hastings came in fourth overall at the Hudson Valley Envirothon among 30 high schools from the Hudson Valley.

“Basically the competition is you rotate through these stations. And at each station they have a packet of questions that the team has to answer. And some of them are just multiple choice and some are hands on activities,” Shandroff said.

The competition is a way for the club to practice what it studies and is passionate about, Shandroff said.

“I think it’s important for them to be knowledgeable about what’s happening environmentally and to kind of help with the community and do community service,” she said. “Just staying involved in the community is the big thing and trying to make some changes.”
