Hastings High School to Host Substance Abuse Talk

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Parents looking to have the dreaded drugs and alcohol talk with their kids are in luck this week. Hastings High School will host substance abuse speaker Michael Nerney Tuesday night for a presentation designed to help parents discuss the dangers of drugs and alcohol with their children.

Local parents, such as Hastings resident Matt Kowalski, who has a 14-year-old daughter, said the program has great potential.

“It kind of depends on the program, but it it’s somebody really giving good ideas without alienating kids then great,” he said.

Nerney’s presentation is called “Adolescent Brains, What’s Happening in there?” and aims to help parents create a better dialogue with their children when discussing the topic of drugs and alcohol.

“Learn about the scope of the problem nationally, statewide and within the community,” the flyer for the event said.

Nerney will also discuss reasoning behind the increase in substance abuse among teens and how these issues can affect test scores, memory and social function.  Possible prevention strategies will also be a key part of the presentation.  Nerney’s presentation will offer tips on how to better communicate with your kids, which Kowalski said is huge for parents looking to have serious conversations about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

“If they could just bring up difficult things, if there’s some kind of middle ground,” he said. “Just having better ways to talk to kids.”

The event, which is presented by the Hastings Education Foundation, is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the Hastings High School auditorium. The event is free and open to all who are interested.
