The event, held in January in Boston, included more than 3,000 student delegates from around the world. Hastings High School sent 19 students to participate.
The four-day mock United Nations meeting is a simulation event for high school students in international relations. At HMUN, student delegates gain insight into the workings of the United Nations and the dynamics of international relations by assuming the roles of UN representatives and members of other international bodies and national cabinets. The event allows students to debate issues that confront world leaders and to draft resolutions in response to these global issues.
Pollard, as a member of the press corps, discussed journalistic integrity. They had to deal with crisis situations and debate as to whether to communicate – or not communicate – the crisis to the general public; and then develop directives on how the news organizations should report the information.
Two examples she debated were a rebel militia uprising and a corrupt president.
