HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Aspiring teen actors will have an opportunity to hone their skills in a new weekeend-long theater program called The Scene at the Purple Crayon in Hastings.
The Scene takes high school theater to another level by offering a weekend of activities and discussion, ending with a performance. The Scene’s first session will be held May 17-19.
Program co-creator Andy Arden Reese, an established theater professional who is new to the Westchester area, believes the power of theater can change lives.
“We chose Spring Awakening as the inaugural subject work for "The Scene" because it is such a fantastic springboard into the inner lives of teens," Reese said. "It’s comic, it’s tragic, it’s the whole enchilada."
Reese said that the acting process offers youngsters an opportunity to explore themselves discover who they uniquely are as artists and as people.
The group will discuss and analyze "Spring Awakening", the popular and acclaimed work that explores issues near and dear to the teenage heart. They will complete exercises to address the themes and messages of the work, and finally create and perform a totally new piece based on their ideas.
“We wanted to offer teens a new and exciting way to connect, to be creative, explore new dramatic methods, and make new connections between what they see and do in theater and their own lives, ” said Sarah Silbert Hinawi, Executive Director of The Purple Crayon.
