The weather station has a high-definition camera and Web-based educational software tools. It will provide weather data for meteorological teams at CBS news stations across the country, to broadcast online and on-air. It will also be used to enhance the science, technology and math curriculums using the WeatherBug Achieve program.
“The students are excited about the hands-on learning opportunities,” said Marc Zelmanowicz, science department chair for Hastings. “They will be able to incorporate real-time weather data into lessons and labs; and this will allow students across the district to more effectively understand the science of meteorology.”
All students in grades kindergarten-12 will have access to the images and instructional software.
The community will also have access to the camera through the WeatherBug app or WeatherBug website to view the Hastings live picture feed; and a real-time screen will be placed in the main office of Hastings High School.
The WeatherBug media partner in New York, WCBS, will leverage the tracking station to offer area residents the most local, up-to-the-second weather information available on Hastings-on-Hudson. WCBS will be able to feature neighborhood-level reports from the Farragut Complex during its daily newscasts on-air and online.
Teachers and students in K-12 have access to local weather conditions from any of the 8,000 WeatherBug sites in the country. Using WeatherBug Achieve, teachers can also create customized learning activities based on current and historical weather conditions from the WeatherBug stations and cameras located at the schools.
