IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Members of the Irvington High School Investment Club spoke with Rep. Nita Lowey (D- Harrison), a ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, about the state of the economy when she visited the high school on March 9.

Junior Shivay Parekh, president of the Investment Club, arranged the visit. As part of the Investment Club, students compete against other high school students across the nation in the Capitol Hill Challenge, for which Lowey is the official Irvington High School sponsor.

“With this sudden interest in the election, I thought that reaching out to Congresswoman Lowey, who has such influence in our community, would be a good idea for the students to meet with her, learn from her experience and learn more about the local economy,” Parekh said.

Lowey spoke to more than 50 club members, as well as teachers and administrators, on topics ranging from student loans to local issues and her thoughts on the presidential candidates.

“It was such a privilege for me to speak to a group so intelligent and well-informed,” said Lowey, who added that she hopes everyone who is eligible will register to vote in this year’s election. “As a representative in Congress, I try to tell them how the policies and the legislation that we pass affects every part of their lives, certainly the financial part, but when you’re increasing money for the National Institutes of Health, it affects your personal life as well.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Parekh said it’s important for young people to be educated before they can go out and vote.

“As the young generation, we’re starting to become the voters who are going to shape the government and the economy of the world, so it’s really important that we learn about these important issues,” he said.
