The students were asked to read one or more full-length memoir before selecting one for which they would create a video trailer.

The seventh-graders used the Web tool Animoto to execute their video projects, which were complete with text, pictures, video clips and music. Each student gave a presentation about his or her literary choice in front of fellow classmates, who then watched the student’s trailer.

“[This project] left students with a glimpse into the multitude of true-life stories about real people available to read through this exciting genre,” Sandler said. “After being immersed in the reading of this genre, students began to write their own memoirs about a coming-of-age experience that changed them in some meaningful way.”
