Seventh-grader Henry Demarest won the state You Be The Chemist Challenge and will compete with 38 other state champions in Philadelphia on June 20.

Created by the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF), the You Be The Chemist Challenge is an interactive contest for fifth through eighth graders to explore chemistry concepts and applications.

The top four finishers at the national competition will receive around $18,500 in scholarships.

“Competing in the Challenge is a wonderful way for middle school students to explore the chemistry of their everyday lives,” said CEF executive director John Rice in a statement.
