IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Sixteen Irvington High School students who demonstrated creativity and imagination were recognized by the district with a Core Value Award for the month of January.

The award recipients were Imogen Aukland, Marcus Boykin, Aldo Bushati, Jillian Cusiak, Maxine Ewing, Mikelis Grendze, Miranda Jacobson, Simon Knowler, Jack Mackessy, Monique Magras, Chi Ogilve, Julia O’Quinn, Michael Sagan, Jordan Schwed, Cameron Soravilla and Andreas Vatakis.

When asked why creativity is an important quality, the students cited a variety of reasons, including that it leads to innovation and a more interesting life. “It provides the ability to express yourself in real life where real-life rules don’t apply,” one student said.

For the first time in district history, administrators are giving out monthly Core Value Awards to students who exemplify the many character traits that have shaped the school community. The first Core Value Award for the month of September was given out to 15 students in the category of humor and joy. Eighteen students were recognized for demonstrating the ability to understand and share others’ feelings for the month of October.

Administrators awarded 11 students for displaying global thinking and care for their community for the month of November, and recognized 11 students for the month of December for demonstrating perseverance in their classrooms and extracurricular activities. Throughout the rest of the school year, students will receive recognition for collaboration, leadership, responsible risk-taking and subject excellence.
