DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. ? Athletes and coaches at Mercy College will use their status as sports figures to promote sportsmanship on the field and in Dobbs Ferry itself under a new athletics department initiative.

The program will operate out of a new Center For Civility created by the Department of Athletics and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, according to Jack Zolle, director of sports information.

The center's mission will be to promote respect, honesty, humility and integrity both on campus and in the community as well.

"The idea was prompted when Athletic Director Pat Kennedy wanted to spread what the East Coast Conference and National Collegiate Athletic Association preach, [namely] good sportsmanship and respect on the field, and apply it to all other aspects of life at the campus, college and surrounding communities and its citizens," Zolla said

Mercy's student athletes will voluntarily sign a pledge prior to their respective seasons stating: "I will act with respect, honesty and concern for others and will seek to inspire the same values in our community and beyond."

Zolla said the student-athletes have been helping to spread the word and have committed to the new initiative by signing the pledge.

The Mercy College Department of Athletics and its staff, coaches and administrators have pledged to hold themselves to this standard as part of the Center of Civility's effort.

All game day materials, public address announcements and publicity literature will now contain this pledge.
