Mercy College Offers Symposium On Dynamic Bilingualism

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Mercy College is hosting its first Symposium on Dynamic Bilingualism on Friday, Feb. 6, from 9 a..m.-noon. The conference aims to examine how to better teach and motivate students who are learning English along with their native language.

The event will be held at Mercy Hall Rotunda at 555 Broadway.

“Here in Westchester County this issue is growing every day as the Spanish-speaking population in the county grows," said Zoila Tazi, Mercy College educational leadership department associate professor. " We want to get ahead of the issue and help develop practitioners’ expertise for effective practices when teaching these students.”

Angélica Infante, state associate commissioner for bilingual education, will address the audience at the start of the event. Ofelia García, international scholar on bilingualism at the CUNY Graduate Center, will serve as the keynote speaker for the symposium. 

Panelists will be Tazi, Bilingualism in Early Childhood; María Cioe Peña, CUNY Graduate Center, Students with Disabilities in Shared Pathways to Success; Kate Seltzer, CUNY Graduate Center;  Aramina Vega Ferrer, Mercy College, Working with Bilingual Parents at the Parent Center; Sarah Hesson, CUNY Graduate Center, New York State Initiative for Emergent Bilinguals, K-12. 

The symposium is a collaboration between the literacy and multilingual studies department of Mercy College and the New York State Association for Bilingual Education.
