HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- As the scent of hot popcorn wafted through the makeshift movie theater, local kids cheered at the 25 foot screen. The Hastings Recreation Department hosted its first Popcorn and Pajamas event as local kids came in their pajamas to watch a screening of "Hoodwinked Too."
The event coincided with back to school night at Hillside Elementary School, which helped take a load off parents' shoulders.
"It's great, it's because its open house and there's no babysitter," said Liz Cambria, who dropped off daughters Alexa and Sienna at the event. "We would have had to drive to Riverdale and drop them off with my mother."
Arts and crafts were set up for the kids before the movie started along with Legos and other activities.
"It gives the kids something to do, tires them out a bit so you're not scrambling for a babysitter," said Lisa O'Reilly, Hastings recreation assistant. "We planned it that way."
Even though it was just the first time the recreation department had held the event, the turnout was strong.
"It's the first time we've done it so were happy," said Kendra Garrison, Hastings recreation supervisor. "It's about 20-25 kids."
