HASTINGS, N.Y. -- ?Hastings Superintendent Roy R. Montesano sent the following letters to parents and residents of the Hastings School District on Wednesday:
Dear Parents/Guardians:
I am writing to follow up on the earlier email from this morning regarding the incident involving one of our students.
After further investigation and communication with the police department, I am pleased to let you know, the couple offering the ride to our student has been identified and that there was no ill intent on the part of the couple.
The student absolutely did the right thing by returning home, speaking to his parents and calling the police. We are grateful to Chief Visalli and the Hastings police department for their follow up and assistance in working with us to keep our students safe. While this incident turned out to be nothing more than a misunderstanding, it does remind us to review safety procedures and information with our children. Dear Parents/Guardians:
This morning as one of our students was walking to school, he reported that he was approached by a male and female in a gray sedan and asked if he wanted a ride to school. The student immediately left and was able to return home safely. We have been in contact with the police who are following up on this incident and will have increased patrols around our schools and neighborhood.
Please take the time to talk with your child about the dangers of strangers and what to do in the event a stranger approaches them. Should you have any questions, please contact the Hastings police department, the school district office or your building principal.
