Westchester County Voters Overwhelmingly Approve School Budgets

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - Westchester County residents made their way to the polls on Tuesday to cast their votes on their school district’s annual budget and Board of Education trustees.

Ardsley: George Holt, Hrishi Karthikeyan and Pamela Epstein are running for two seats on the school board. The $67.5 million budget increases spending by 1.75 percent with a 2.52 percent increase on the tax levy. Voters will also decide whether to create a capital reserve fund.

Eastchester: The budget overwhelmingly passed with a vote of 772-324. Trustees Vito Catania (840 votes), Judah Holstein (831) and Robert Summer were elected to fill three open seats on the Board of Education. 

Mount Vernon: The $246 million proposed budget, representing no tax levy increase for the third consecutive year passed in Mount Vernon. 

"We are humbled and gratified to see the results of tonight’s vote,” Board of Education President Lesly Zamor said. “Our board and administration worked extremely hard to develop and present a budget which allows us to provide the best possible education to our students while being mindful of our use of the public’s money to make that happen.”

New Rochelle: Voters elected Amy Moselhi and Paul Warhit to the Board of Education. The proposed $204 million budget was also overwhelmingly approved.

“I am truly grateful to this community for supporting this budget which holds true to our commitment to provide the very best education for our students while remaining fiscally responsible,” Schools Superintendent Brian Osborne said. “In addition to maintaining all academic programs, the budget adds positions to accommodate for enrollment increases, maintains favorable class sizes and meets pressing student needs.”

Pelham: Following a strong voter turnout, residents chose to pass the schools budget by a 1,085-186 vote.e Jessica DeDomenico and Sue Bratone Childs were each elected to serve three-year terms on the Board of Education, topping Ben Mets, Lonnie Phillips and Stephen Doka. 

Port Chester:  Incumbents Anne Capeci and Robert Johnson are being challenged by Thomas Corbia and Joseph Lodato with two seats open.  The $96 million budget increases spending by 4.3 percent and increases the tax levy by .77 percent. In a narrow vote, residents chose to accept the budget, 863 to 686. Anne Capeci and Tom Corbia were each elected to three-year terms on the Board of Education.

Tuckahoe: Although the budget passed, voters opted against purchasing a property on Ridge Street in Eastchester, 645-406. Michelle Liscio and Peter Casson have been named to the Board of Education on three-year terms and Cynthia Biondi Tait will serve a one-year term. 

White Plains: With 86.4 percent of the vote (823 "yes" votes against 130 "no" votes), the district's budget easily passed. Board of Education candidates Rosemarie and Randy Stein each earned election.
