Andrea Coddett, who has lived in Yonkers for nearly three decades, was announced as the school district’s new Deputy Superintendent on Monday, where she will serve alongside Superintendent Edwin Quezada.
Citing her life experience experiences and “substantive understanding of the (Yonkers) community, parents and students,” local and school officials praised the Board of Education for hiring Coddett, who has been educated in four different countries on three different continents.
“I welcome Dr. Coddett as Yonkers’ new Deputy Superintendent of Schools,” Mayor Mike Spano said in a statement. “(She) joins the district as a seasoned educator and administrator, who brings a diversified and fresh perspective that will surely benefit Yonkers students and staff.”
In her new position, Coddett will be tasked with supervising the district's Division of Teaching and Learning, where she will ensure that the district is aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards and all students are prepared for post-graduate careers or college.
“As Deputy Superintendent, Coddett will champion the Board of Education’s new mission,” Quezada stated. “(Her) academic experience and achievements in leadership positions align with our district’s needs and goals.”
Before transitioning to her hometown school district, Coddett served as an Assistant Superintendent for Instruction in the East Ramapo School District. She has also worked as a mathematics specialist, early childhood principal and a secondary special education director.
According to Coddett, who considers herself a lifelong learner, “it is her contention that as an educational leader, she is one of the gatekeepers of tomorrow and believes every child deserves an excellent education.”
“My work is enlightened by the American educator and philosopher John Dewey, who noted ‘education is not preparation for life; education is life itself,” she mused. “I embrace his thoughts in every interaction I have with students, parents and staff.”
