PELHAM, N.Y. -- Anthony Senerchia was trying not to think about, but when he took the mound for the sixth inning, the Pelham starting pitcher realized it. Senerchia had a no-hitter through five innings against Hastings and was six outs away from joining teammate Gjon Ljucovic, who tossed a no-no against White Plains.
Matt Adipietro would spoil it though with a two-out single in the sixth but Senerchia would allow no more. The right-hander finished with a one-hitter and five strikeouts in a 7-0 shutout of visiting Hastings.
The Pelicans' (4-2) David Wright, Ljucovic and Senerchia have allowed eight runs in six games and posted two shutouts. Senerchia has not allowed a run in 10 innings this season. He tossed three spotless innings in relief against Byram Hills last week.
Pitching those three innings brought my confidence up because it had been a while since I was on the mound, said Senerchia, who helped himself with a two-run double in the fifth inning. I am glad I finally got a chance to pitch today. Ben called a great game today. They were a good hitting team, but I was able to throw strikes and our defense made the plays for me.
Adipietro, who turned two double plays, punched a single up the middle in the sixth. Prior to that, Hastings best opportunity at a hit came in the third. Nick Galasso hit a long fly ball to straight-away center field that Ljucovic chased down. Senerchia also started a 1-6-3 double play in the fourth inning.
Anthony threw a great game today, catcher Ben Schwartz said. His curveball was on and the location on his fastball was great.
Pelham supplied Senerchia with a 3-0 lead after two innings. In the first inning, Henry Manning singled, swiped second and scored on Wrights single to left. Wright is 4 for 7 with four RBI in the last two games.
Greg Sigelbaum led off the second inning with a walk and stolen base. Senerchia was hit by a pitch and Mark Hernandez followed with a line-drive single to center on an 0-2 pitch, scoring Sigelbaum. Wright increased the lead to 3-0 with a double to deep left. Adipietro turned double plays in the second and third innings. In the second, Adipietro chased down a pop up on the left-field line and threw out the base runner attempting to score. Adipietro snared a line drive in the third and doubled the runner off of second base. Adipietro also began a double play in the first inning.
